500 Student VISA (Primary/Secondary school)
Introduction:
500 visa for primary and secondary schools, that is, a visa issued to domestic primary, junior high, or high school students who apply to continue studying primary, junior high, or high school courses in Australia.
Target Group:
Domestic primary, junior high, or high school students; aged 6 or above, who apply to enroll in Grade 10 must not be over 18 years old, who apply to enroll in Grade 11 must not be over 19 years old, and who apply to enroll in Grade 12 must not be over 20 years old.
Requirement:
The duration of high school study in Australia must not be less than 16 months, so the latest application should be for the third semester of grade 11. However, schools generally do not allow students to join grade 11 mid-year. Skipping grades is not allowed in Australian high schools. For example, if a student graduates from junior high school before going to Australia, they cannot study grade 11 in Australia. Australian high schools allow reverse study. For example, if a student just finished high school in China and goes to Australia, they can study high school again in Australia. However, the time for reverse study cannot exceed one and a half years (calculated from the time of enrollment in the main course).
English requirements: If the applicant is under 16 years old, they can be exempted from the IELTS test naturally. If the applicant is 16 years old or older, they can apply for an exemption from the IELTS test. Details of the English requirements and exemption conditions are as follows.
Guardian arrangement: If the applicant is under 18 years old, they need to arrange for a guardian in Australia. Generally, the decision on who will act as the guardian needs to be made when applying for the school. Parents can choose to have the school or education bureau arrange a guardian. If the parents have a designated guardian in Australia, they need to apply in advance and be reviewed. The qualified guardian must be over 21 years old and can be the student's sibling, grandfather, grandmother, uncle, aunt, stepfather, or stepmother who has permanent residence and a criminal record clearance in the local area.
Visa duration: The general high school course ends in December, so the validity of the visa usually lasts until March 15 of the following year.
Work permission: Students over 18 years old are allowed to work after the formal course begins, and can work up to 40 hours every two weeks during class time. If the student is initially granted a student visa when they are under 18 years old, they need to apply for a work permit after turning 18 before they can work.
Language requriement:
IELTS requirement for high school
Generally, Australian high schools require an IELTS score of 5 to 5.5 for students who are directly enrolled in high school main courses. For students in Chinese middle or high schools who are already busy with their studies, it is difficult for them to find time to prepare for the IELTS exam. Therefore, most Australian high schools accept students who transfer from high school preparation courses (HSP) to main courses. For students who do not provide IELTS or other English exam scores, the previous HSP course is usually assumed to be 20 weeks. After enrollment, the number of weeks may decrease or increase based on the individual's English proficiency.
Visa IELTS requirement
Students need to provide an IELTS score or participate in a language course based on the school's requirements.
Other language exam requirements
An increasing number of private schools include AEAS exam scores as part of their admission requirements. Additionally, some schools do not require students to take any English exams and instead arrange language courses for them, but students still need to provide proof of a score of 75% or higher in middle school English, as well as proof of high school admission or enrollment.
